I have been trying to do research on whether or not any of the cough medicine actually works that have not been able to find a definitive answer.

I did a little research, and the best source I could find was a review study of other studies that concludes "Over the counter cough medicines for acute cough cannot be recommended because there is no good evidence for their effectiveness." I also came across a study of cough medicines vs. placebo in children that found them no more effective than the placebo.

I'll admit this surprised the hell out of me, since I had been operating under the assumption that some merit would be behind such common treatments. However, I am forced to suggest that no, unless you have a severe cold you might as well have lemon and honey tea or something else as a soothing and comforting placebo. If you do have severe symptoms, go and see a doctor, and if necessary they will prescribe something effective. Thanks for asking the question and making me do the research!

It seems that honey cures the common cough better than OTC medications. Try a spoonful and see if it works.

that study was not completely double blinded the no treatment group knew they weren't getting a treatment – Zach Jan 21 at 12:41
Despite problems pointed out by Zach, I wouldn't be surprised if something was in it. It's been shown that more invasive treatments have a greater placebo effect (a jab works better than a pill, all things being equal) - see some of Ben Goldacre's articles for more information on that at www.badscience.net. Similarly, it seems plausible that a substance that is very thick and viscous like honey that the cougher can feel running down their throat might produce more of an effect than a runnier remedy. – SurplusGamer Jan 21 at 16:31
Stack Excahnge is not a forum or message board. Answers should be well research and sources cited where possible. If there is an explanation on another site please summerise it in your answer in addition to just providing links. Refer to the skepticexchange.org/faq – rjstelling Jul 10 at 19:15
