Living in France, I know the answer to this one: There's an old tale that the Haitians made a pact with with the Devil to ensure their liberation from France. Seemingly, in 1804 (at the end of a long and bloody revolution that began in 1791), there could be no other possible explanation for a bunch of ragged Africans overthrowing the world's great superpower.

It is interesting as it was controversial enough at the time - it was hardly in keeping with a strict application of the French revolutionary values of liberté, fraternité et egalité to have a possession that was ruled by violence and fear over an illiterate majority. Unfortunately the pioneer state was (and has to this day, sadly) been unable to overcome the colonial intervention and quickly degenerated into political instability, the model for repressive minority rule borrowed from the French.

Needless to say, I suspect it would take me a great deal of time indeed to find anyone here who remotely agrees with what Pat Robinson is waffling about, merely using a bit of white history to gain attention for his hate-filled, racist delusions, inflated and protected by the ubiquitous precense of organised religion.

So it's an old urban legend or folk tale then. Probably created by folks like Pat. Well, thanks for the info! – Skrivener Jan 14 at 22:28
The Devil himself made this amusing rebuttal to Pat Robinson: npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2010/01/… – MGW Lahiffe Jan 18 at 4:54
