Is there evidence that proves a phonetic approach is more effective that learning by word recognition as I did?
http://www.skepticexchange.org/questions/67/is-transcutaneous-electrical-nerve-stimulation-tens-effective/235#235 Answer by stan for Is "Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation" (TeNS) Effective? stan 2009-12-30T23:55:11Z 2009-12-30T23:55:11Z
I used a TENS machine during labour with my first child and needed no other pain relief up until having an epidural for an emergency c-section. I did not use a TENS machine during my second labour (i was expecting to have another section but my daughter had other ideas!)that was far shorter but needed additional pain relief earlier. I couldn't say if the TENS had a physical or psychological effect but it certainly helped. I would definately use one again if i was to have another child - which I definately won't!
http://www.skepticexchange.org/questions/95/is-man-made-global-warming-worthy-of-concern/122#122 Answer by stan for Is man made global warming worthy of concern? stan 2009-12-08T12:22:47Z 2009-12-08T12:22:47Z
What ever the cause of Global Warming and personally I believe that AGW has a valid scienctific basis, surely the bigger issue is if there is something we can do to protect the vulnerable living in poor countries then it is our duty and hopefully our want to do so. Forget about risng sea levels and homeless polar bears a 2oC rise in global temperatures could have a devistating effect on crop production in countries already struggling to feed their populations. This rise could increase the temperature above that which is optimum for photosynthisis causing decreases in crop yield and potential famine. Changes in sea and air temperatures could potentially alter the life cycles of many plant and animal species putting ecosystems in danger. If there is a chance that we are responsible for the speed at which our climate appears to be changing should we not rise to the challenge of doing something about it!
http://www.skepticexchange.org/questions/95/is-man-made-global-warming-worthy-of-concern/122#122 Comment by stan stan 2009-12-10T21:12:38Z 2009-12-10T21:12:38Z Trees may have survived huge temperature changes but little is known as to the effect temperature changes could have on modern crop plant varieties. Photosynthesis is a series of enzyme controlled reactions all of which have their own optimum temperature. A small change in temperature could lower the rate of these reactions decreasing the plants food production and ultimately affecting yield. I am not convinced that crop plants have the ability to huddle in the 9 months they are in the soil! I agree that biofuels are are truly bad idea - nuclear seems the way forward!
